Verde Clean Fuels

Renewable gasoline from waste feedstocks.

HQ: Houston, TX | Industry: Energy | Invested: 2023

About

Verde Clean Fuels proprietary ‘syngas-to-gasoline plus’ (STG+®) turns waste feedstocks – such as biomass, municipal solid waste (MSW), and renewable natural gas (RNG) – into gasoline or methanol. The renewable gasoline can result in more than a 60% reduction in carbon intensity versus traditional hydrocarbon-based gasoline based on GREET-style Carbon Intensity analysis. Verde’s process also can produce a lower carbon gasoline from flared or economically disadvantaged natural gas. Verde’s multi-patented technology has been developed over the past 15 years and tested at its demonstration facility in New Jersey.

Market drivers

Gasoline demand will remain strong over time despite electric vehicle (EV) adoption. EVs are only 1% of 2021 U.S. fleet and 24% of projected 2035 U.S. fleet, and the EIA predicts 2035 gasoline demand of between 92% and 102% of 2022 levels. Renewable gasoline is readily adoptable with no changes in consumer behavior or existing gasoline distribution infrastructure.

Impact

Verde Clean fuels offers a solution to address the largest source of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Gasoline accounts for more than 20% of U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions. Renewable gasoline can rapidly de-carbonize the 268 million internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the U.S., by reducing lifecycle emissions by over 67% compared to traditional gasoline. By using MSW as a feedstock, Verde Clean Fuels will also help to abate the 292 million tons of MSW generated annually and put into landfills.
